The city of Ann Arbor is in the process of installing a stormwater system on the south side of Main Street, and a pedestrian bridge from Van Dyke Street to Adams Street.
City officials announced Wednesday that the project will cost about $6.1 million and will be paid for from park reserves. Work will begin this summer and should be completed by the end of 2014, officials said.
The stormwater pipe and its surrounding concrete basin will be installed in a 10-foot-wide area between 26th Street and Adams Street, from just north of the Red Cedar River to just south of the Ann Arbor District Library. The pipe will extend from the library area down through the south parking lot.
“The pipe is designed to carry stormwater from the southern portion of Main Street and into the system for treatment,” said Tom Graham, the city's director of utilities. “The pipe itself is not a storm sewer pipe. It is a culvert with a concrete liner.”
